The Tomatin Distillery was established in 1897 and was better known as Tomatin Spey Distillery Co. Ltd. The distillery went bankrupt in 1906 but it was then reopened in 1909. It managed to produce whisky till 1986 before being bought over by a Japanese company Takara Shuzo and at this time it was renamed Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd. This distillery is a massive operation producing around 2 and a half million litres of spirit each year but it has the capacity to produce 5 million litres. Most of the whisky produced at Tomatin goes into blended whisky which consist of their own brands named Antiquary and Talisman. This distillery though wants to be know for its single malt whisky . and have stepped up their game in this area.

One week every year they have started to produce a lightly peated single malt and named it Cu Bocan after a mythical black beast thought to stalk the Highlanders of Scotland. We think this single malt whisky is a beast in its own right. This Cu Bocan is matured in Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout and Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal Wine Casks. A very interesting combination and an unusual risky experiment from this distillery. Named Creations Number one it delivers some incredible flavours quite different to that of the more well know Tomatin whiskies.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Signature Tomatin crunchy red apples, toasted barley, freshly baked shortbread, melted dark chocolate and iced coffee.

Palate: Baked apples with almonds and walnuts. Plum and fig tart drizzled with dark chocolate and wood smoke.

Finish: Blueberries and raspberries more melted dark chocolate and some very arousing smokey notes.
