About the Winery

The land on which the winery and the vineyard sits was owned by Passiflora Plantations Company in the 1930’s. It was set up to become Australia’s leading exporter of passionfruit and products associated. They planted over 70,000 passionfruits and then sadly the plantation was destroyed by disease. It was then purchased by the Seppelt family in the 1940’s and it was turned into a vineyard. Wine judge and retailer Doug Seabrook then maintained the vineyard till 1967 when the area was devastated by bushfires and the vines were destroyed.

In 1998 the vineyard was given another lease of life and passed through many owners but sadly it fell into neglect. That was until latest owner Jim Manolios developed the property as a cafe restaurant, vineyard and winery. And what a fine job he’s done. The vineyard boasts pinot noir, chardonnay, shiraz, pinot gris and cabernet sauvignon grapes which sit on 18.5 hectares. Trofeo Estate is the exclusive Australian distributor of terracotta amphorae made in Italy, hence the involvement of amphorae in the making of a number of the wines.

The process of terracotta ageing does not impart any flavour influence on the wine, resulting in wines that are elegant and soft, reflecting the natural flavours and aromas of the grapes. Terracotta amphorae winemaking techniques are known to produce delicious wines full of pure fruit expression and varietal character.

Terracotta is an inorganic medium that does not harbor spoilage micro-organisms, reducing the levels of sulphur required to preserve the wine. Terracotta ‘breathes’ allowing oxygen into the winemaking process, this assists in developing palate and mouthfeel, whilst amplifying aromatics and flavours.

About The Wine

A top tier Pinot Noir, a blend of the most unique Terracotta Amphorae that represent the best of their varietal.

Grown on the Trofeo Estate in the cool climate, grey loam and clay soils of the Mornington Peninsula, this wine is sure to excite the senses. Forest fruits and dried cranberries are evident on the nose, with an underlying hint of red currants. On the palate, red berries and sweet spices are dominant. This wine presents an earthy savoury character whilst ensuring a delicate balance of fruit and refreshing acidity. Silky smooth tannins give this wine body. The finish is one of sumptuous lingering fruit with delicate spice. Excellent cellaring potential.
