Scotch Whisky is known the world-over by the Brand names of large blending companies. These blends are the mixture of the products of various distilleries which were originally independent family owned units. Until the middle of the 20th century there were many small firms that bottled and sold the pure product of the local distilleries. Since Victorian times the firm of William Cadenhead has provided this service. However a diminution of public interest caused the small bottling companies to close down. Only a small handful of distilleries still remain in the ownership of their founding families and even fewer of the bottling companies remain active, William Cadenhead is one of the notable survivors.

Trinidad Distillers was established by Angostura back in the 1940s. At first this was primarily for rum production but as time went on, bulk exports formed a large part of its portfolio. Note however that most of the molasses they work with originates outside of Trinidad – in Guyana, Panama and the Dominican Republic.  In any event, Angostura as a company has little to do with it. Cadenhead out of Campbelltown in Scotland have simply followed the craft-bottler route, bought a few barrels distilled in 2001, and then issued the rum at cask strength after it came of age in 2020, without any further mucking about.

This independent bottle by Cadenhead’s has been matured in a single cask for 19 years and bottled at 55% abv. It was distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2020. Only 792 bottles were produced of this very tasty whisky.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Demerara sugar, mango and pineapple.

Palate: Thick butterscotch sauce and root ginger.

Finish: Cinnamon, pecans, fresh pineapple juice.
