The Jeroboam owes its name to two Kings of Israel, the first of whom is regarded as the founder of the Kingdom of Israel. You can see why; this 3-litre bottle is indeed majestic in size.

These are only the third and fourth release of their Prestige Cuvée, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, in Jeroboam, following the 1988 and 1999: the ultimate marriage of quality and quantity. Across all four vintages, just in excess of 500 jeroboams have ever been produced. The vintage jeroboams are hand-labelled and individually numbered, the 2009 from 1 – 109 and the 2012 from 1 – 198.

Diamond Champagnes proudly presents the limited release of Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2009 and 2012 in Jeroboam format. We are offering only 21 bottles of the 2009 and 38 bottles of the 2012 to the discerning UK market. This release marks only the third and fourth instances of presenting this prestigious cuvée in Jeroboam, following the esteemed 1988 and 1999 vintages. To provide some perspective, we have produced just over 500 Jeroboams across all four vintages, with each one receiving meticulous hand-labeling and an individual numbering.
The Magnificence of Jeroboam
The Jeroboam, a name that carries the weight of history, is the largest champagne format at a grand 3 liters. What sets it apart is that the secondary fermentation takes place right within the bottle. Moreover, the champagne aficionados have long sung praises of the Jeroboam’s virtues, and for good reason. With a smaller aperture relative to the volume of liquid, it allows for less oxidation and greater retention of freshness. Which resuls in wines with extraordinary complexity and aging potential that can stretch beyond 20 years.
The Art of Blending
Champagne Pol Roger’s Prestige Cuvée, named in honor of Sir Winston Churchill, is a closely guarded family secret when it comes to its exact blend. However, what’s undeniable is that the composition embodies the qualities Churchill cherished in his champagne: robustness, full-bodied character, and a touch of maturity. Pinot Noir, the backbone of the blend, imparts structure and robustness, while Chardonnay adds elegance, finesse, and subtlety. All the grapes are from Grands Crus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards that have a history dating back to Churchill’s lifetime.
The Vintages: 2009 and 2012
In 2009, favorable weather conditions led to a harvest of perfect grapes. This year, Pinot Noir took center stage, resulting in a blend that featured even less Chardonnay than usual, allowing the Pinot Noir to shine and giving the wine greater body.
The 2012 vintage brought its own set of challenges, with a rollercoaster of weather conditions throughout the year. However, hot, sunny weather from late July to early September ensured ideal grape ripening, albeit with lower yields. These two vintages, harvested 34 and 37 years after the first Churchill vintage in 1975, reaffirm the family’s commitment to producing Churchill only in the most exceptional years.
Tasting Notes
Upon indulging in a glass of Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2012 Jeroboam, you’ll be happy by a broad and impressive nose, characterized by the distinctive Pinot Noir notes that define this cuvée. Hints of Pink Lady apples, Manuka honey, and lightly toasted hazelnuts dance on your palate. The texture is luxurious and well-rounded, a testament to the extended time spent on the lees. Yet, it’s balanced by precise acidity, ensuring both immediate pleasure and the promise of growing complexity over the years.
Sir Winston Churchill and Champagne Pol Roger: A Timeless Friendship
The bond between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill traces its roots back to a serendipitous encounter at a luncheon hosted by the British Ambassador to France. Here, the exquisite 1928 vintage of Pol Roger played a pivotal role in uniting Churchill and Odette Pol-Roger in friendship. While Churchill’s duties kept him from visiting the Champagne estate, he affectionately dubbed it “the most drinkable address in the world” and even named one of his racehorses “Pol Roger,” celebrating a victory in 1953, Coronation Year.
The Story of the 2012 Vintage
The 2012 vintage posed its challenges, with climatic variations in the development of the grapes. Yet, hot and sunny weather in late summer ensured ideal grape maturity. Harvesting took place from September 10th to 26th, resulting in grapes with excellent health and potential.
Vinification and Maturation
The winemaking process for Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2012 Jeroboam is a labor of love. Two débourbages, including one at the press house and a débourbage à froid, precede a slow cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. We keep each variety and village separate, allowing them to undergo full malolactic fermentation before we do the final blending. We perform the secondary fermentation in bottles in the deepest Pol Roger cellars, where we conduct remuage by hand, which contributes to the fine and persistent mousse that Pol Roger celebrates.
Assemblage
The harmonious blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is the secret behind this champagne’s allure.
