Signatory Vintage are an independent bottler founded in 1988 by Andrew and Brian Symington. The name ‘Signatory’ was derived from the initial intention to find a person of suitable standing to sign the labels for bottles drawn from a single cask. The first cask bottled was a 1968 Glenlivet which quickly sold through long before any suitable signee could be found. Signatory currently bottle at three strengths: 43%, 46% Unchillfiltered (UCF) and Cask Strength.To add proof of authenticity to their cask strength bottlings, Signatory always include the cask numbers, date of distillation, date of bottling and number of bottles produced.Signatory Vintage’s aim is to offer as wide a range of whiskies as possible, some of which are not even bottled by the proprietary distillery. This allows malt enthusiast to sample the huge variety of subtle differences which occur between casks.

The Ledaig or Tobermory Distillery is a single malt whisky distillery located on the island of Mull in the Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. Originally founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, under the name Ledaig (pronounced ‘led-chigg’). The distillery closed in 1837 and reopening in 1878, the distillery was acquired in 1890 by John Hopkins and Company. Today, Tobermory is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. The distillery has quite a small annual capacity of just one million litres and runs at but three quarters of this capacity. In 1930, the distillery closed and was used as a power plant. It was not the only time Tobermory had been used for purposes other than whisky distillation; in 1982 the buildings were leased to a dairy company who used them for storing cheese. The distillery uses malted barley which is shipped from the Port Ellen maltings at the South-East of Islay, also home to a more recent experiment whereby some casks are sent for maturation on the island, these are bottled as Ledaig. The usual releases show us that when it’s bottled Tobermory then no or little peat has been used in the production but when it is released as Ledaig there is a high amount of peat content in the production and therefor a smoky whisky is created.

This single malt whisky was distilled in 2007 at the Tobermory (Ledaig) distillery before being placed in single refill sherry butt and left to mature for 12 years. In 2020 it was bottled at 59.8% abv as part of the Signatory Vintage Cask Strength Collection. Only 604 bottles were produced of this peaty smoky liquid for us all to enjoy.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Bonfire nights by the sea, charred oak and espresso, warmed summer berries.

Palate: Creamy milk chocolate and summer berries, char and barbecued smoke.

Finish: Toasted almonds, banana fritters and charred oak.
