The Isle of Arran distillery was build in 1995 and is now one of two distilleries on the Isle of Arran on Scotland’s West Coast. The distillery boasts an ideal spot for production and distribution of whisky with warm fresh sea air, close proximity to the mainland and an abundance of fresh soft water. Arran enjoys a warm microclimate – the atmosphere of sea breezes and clear mountain air, together with the warm flow of the Gulf Stream is ideal for the speedy maturation of single malts. In the early 19th century, there were more than 50 whisky distilleries on Arran, most of them illegal and carefully hidden from the eyes of the taxmen. The Island’s malt whisky was shipped to the mainland and enjoyed by the gentry, who regularly ‘took the Arran waters’. It was acclaimed at the time as the best whisky in Scotland – only rivalled by those from the ‘Glen of Livet’
Arran ‘The Bodega’ is matured in some of the finest casks available to the whisky industry, this cask strength 100% Sherry matured Single Malt is both luxurious and elegant with layers of rich sweet spice and oak. The Arran Master Distiller James McTaggart has worked with producers in some of the most prestigious Sherry Bodegas in Jerez, Spain to select only the best quality casks to be filled with the distinct Arran precious spirit. This bottling is a return to the style of some of the earliest Arran Single Malt, which was mostly matured in Sherry Casks. Spending 7 years in first fill sherry hogsheads and bottled at 55.8% cask strength.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Terrys’ chocolate orange, ripe cherries, Turkish delight, dried dark fruits, toffee apples, spiced oak.
Palate: Cherries dipped in dark chocolate, stewed dark fruits, Christmas cake spices, salted caramel and traces of citrus.
Finish: Dark chocolate, baking spices, citrus and orchard fruits.
